Betty Meekins of Cambridge, passed away on April 22, 2021 at Signature HealthCARE at Mallard Bay. Born on June 7, 1928, in Toddville, Maryland, she was the daughter of Florence and Emory Simmons. Betty attended school in Fishing Creek and later moved to Cambridge where she raised her three children. She held various jobs throughout her life and was well known for her hand-crocheted afghans of her own design. She also enjoyed attending and holding yard sales.
She is survived by her children, Tiny Greenhawk, Wendell Meekins, Sr. (Paulette), and Richard Meekins (Amy); her six grandchildren Norleen Furroughs, Teresa Cannon, Wendell Meekins, Jr., Clint Meekins, Dirk Meekins and Matthew Meekins. She is also survived by two sisters Mary Belle Meekins and Helen Hughes, a cousin Gloria Whaley along with eight great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, William Bruce Dean; her sister Rebecca Fairbanks, her half-brother, Omar Todd and two half-sisters Lula Simmons and Dorothy Simmons.
Funeral services will be private with a celebration of life to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cambridge Wesleyan Church, 803 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. Services are entrusted to Thomas Funeral Home, P.A.
