Ritchie Leonard "Pappy" Riggins, 82 of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at his home. He was born on October 7, 1930 at Golden Hill and was a son of the late Samuel Clifton and Vera May Wallace Riggins.
Mr. Riggins had attended schools at Kirwan Neck and Forest School. As a merchant's son he loved working with his father, helping on the family's farm and store. This gave him the opportunity to know so many wonderful people. He was self employed in trucking, later his son joined him, becoming R&R Trucking. He also operated a gas station at one time. In 1948, he worked for Dorchester County Roads Board for twenty five years. In 1969, he worked for the State Highway Administration for twenty eight years. He owned and operated Dorchester County School Buses, along with his son Ronald L. Riggins for thirty years. Mr. Riggins loved raising his tomatoes in the garden. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to the auction sales and tractor pulls. On October 14, 1950, he married Myrtle Viola Bowers, who passed away on June 23, 2005.
He is survived by a daughter Pauline A. Price and husband Hobart E. Price, Sr. of Church Creek, a son Ronald L. "Ronnie" Riggins and his companion Janice Holden of Brannocks Neck, three grandchildren Carolyn A. Elzey of East New Market, Kimberley A. Koski and husband Joseph K. "Joe" Koski, Sr. of Laurel, DE and Hobart E. "Eddie" Price, Jr. of Cambridge. He is also survived by six great grandchildren Hailey E. Price, Adam D. Elzey, Joseph K. "Joey" Koski, Jr., Kyle A. Koski, Joshua E. Koski and Kevin M. Koski and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Riggins is preceded in death by a sister Pauline Fleming and two brothers S. Clifton Riggins, Jr. and Rubin S. "John" Riggins.
Pallbearers will be John Shenton, Joe Ruark, Billy Rockweft, Allen Simmons, Bobby Greenly and Vernon Webb.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor George W. Wheatley, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
