Allen L. Satterfield, 85, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 at UMSMC at Easton. Allen was born in Denton on April 26, 1929 to the late Albert Lee and Viola Harris Satterfield. The family moved to Secretary and later to East New Market.
Allen joined the U.S. Navy in April of 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Leyte which was on “Goodwill Tours” at the close of WWII. He always called this “gravy train duty” as he enjoyed it very much. He was honorably discharged in February of 1948. Shortly, after he started a ceramic tile business which he operated until 1974. Due to a serious back injury, he was forced to close his ceramic business. By 1975, he had obtained his GED as well as his Maryland and Delaware Real Estate License.
From 1964 until 1977, Allen and his family resided in Seaford, Delaware. During this time there he was a member of the organization committee of the Seaford Elks Lodge #2458. He was the 1st and 3rd Exalted Ruler. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge #21.
Allen and his family moved back to Cambridge in 1977 where he continued his real estate career until retiring at the age of 82.
Allen is survived by his wife of 58 years the former Sylvia Marshall, two sons Don Satterfield and wife Ruth and David Satterfield and friend Melissa all of Cambridge; three grandchildren Shane Satterfield of Cambridge, Jennifer Ritchard and husband Kenneth of Crestwood, Ky., Jillian Fritz and husband Gabriel of Louisville, Ky., three great grandchildren Jacob Ritchard, Allison Ritchard, and Roman Fritz and his beloved pooch Abby. Also four sisters Jeannette Baker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., Doris Wright and husband Bill of Seaford, DE, Shirley Satterfield of East New Market and Joyce Coyne and husband Joe of Madison and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Allen is preceded by a great granddaughter Claire Viola Ritchard, a brother Bill Satterfield and a sister Jean Lane.
Mr. Satterfield donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board in hopes of finding a cure for Angiosarcoma.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Mr. David Tolley officiating. Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 280, East New Market, MD 21631.
