Allen Meade Elzey, 80, of Cambridge passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 peacefully at his home with his family, after a long roller coaster ride with cancer for 22 years and 4 months. He was born in Golden Hill on February 21, 1940 and was a son of the late Olin and Cecelia Wallace Elzey.
Mr. Elzey graduated from South Dorchester High School class of 1958. He loved sports especially running track. Mr. Elzey was so proud of his high school and classmates and the many class luncheons and reunions. He served in the Army National Guard and also with the U.S. Army. Mr. Elzey was a waterman, and a trapper. He also worked at Wroten Island and Crab Point Gunning Club.
Mr. Elzey enjoyed his brothers and sisters in their homes drinking coffee and reminiscing back to their earlier years especially the 50’s and 60’s. Kitty’s Market and Dockside Market was his favorite hangouts, meeting with his friends and their fishing, crabbing, oystering, and trapping stories.
His faith was in God, family and his country. He would say, when he got through Church Creek, no matter where he had been or where he was going, he knew he was home.
Mr. Elzey was a member of the St. Thomas United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #91, and the 29th Division of the Army National Guard.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Brenda L. Elzey of Cambridge, two daughters Teresa Elzey and Kimberly Yapp both of Cambridge and a son Robert O. Elzey and wife Cathy of Wingate, grandchildren Amanda Yate (Robbie), Zachary Elzey, Josh Fluharty (Danielle), Matthew, Ryan and Nicholas Elzey, great grandchildren Amberlynn Elzey, Jaxon Yate, Kali Fluharty, Emma Hubbard and Zhihong Pang, a brother Bud Elzey and wife Dottie, three sisters Margaret Bennett, Florence Elzey and Peggy Ruark, a brother in law Leonard Hubbard and wife Xiaphong, Carolyn Todd and husband Arthur, whom he loved like a sister, Emma Hubbard and Katie Kissinge, whom he loved like granddaughters and fat fur baby Buddy Beam.
Besides his parents, Mr. Elzey is preceded in death by a son Mark Elzey, a stepson David Fluharty, his brothers and sister Wallace Elzey, Prettyman Elzey (Virginia), Toots Elzey (Olive), Harry Elzey (Patsy), and Jeannie Insley (Alvin). Mr. Elzey is also preceded in death by his in laws Leonard Hubbard, and Robert and Emma Arnie and a brothers in law Sidney Bennett and Bobby Ruark.
Pallbearers will be Robert Elzey, Matthew Elzey, Ryan Elzey, Nicholas Elzey, Chris Jones and Donnie Simmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Hubbard, Leonard Hubbard, Arthur Todd, Johnny Holotik, Rick Elzey and Melvin Paul.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 11 am at Dorchester Memorial Park with Rev. Michael LaClair officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to South Dorchester Community Center, c/o Susan Windsor, 2537 Toddville Road, Toddville, MD 21672. Face mask and social distancing will be required. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
