Alton Paul “Murph” Murphy, 93, of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

Born on March 1, 1923 in Cambridge he was the son of the late Ralph E. and Gladys Madkins Murphy.

Mr. Murphy graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1940. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during WWII, from December 1943 until March 1946. Campaigns included the Rhineland Central Europe and the European African Middle Eastern Theater receiving numerous medals and ribbons.

On November 9, 1941, he married the former Roberta C. McGlaughlin. “Murph” and Roberta had 67 wonderful years together before she passed away on Oct. 16, 2008.

Mr. Murphy worked as letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 32 years of service. He held several officer titles with the local National Association of Letter Carriers. Early in his work career he was employed by the National Can Co. and the local Coca Cola Bottling CO.

He enjoyed working in his flowers, attending his 258th Engineer Combat Battalion reunions, playing his harmonica and spending time on his porch. In his younger years he was very active umpiring youth and adult baseball and softball games. He also was an avid bowler and office holder with the Greater Eastern Shore Bowling Association.

Mr. Murphy was a member of the Grace United Methodist Baraca Class serving many years as treasurer, the American Legion Post 91 and the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW.

He is survived by a son Ronald P. Murphy and wife Marilyn of Bradenton, FL, five grandchildren Gregory Murphy and wife Aimee of Bradenton, FL., Jeffrey Murphy and wife Jennifer of Bradenton, FL., Kendra Murphy, Robert Murphy and Shane Murphy, 11 great grandchildren, a daughter in law Jennifer Murphy of the Philippines and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Murphy is preceded in death by a son Eugene Murphy, three sisters Hilda Brannock, Betty Miller and Gloria Phelps, and a brother Ralph Murphy, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Greg Murphy, Jeff Murphy, Stanley Toms, Randy McGlaughin, Chris Willey, and Howard Ackerman.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 1pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
