Barbara Hinson Hales, 90, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017 at her home in Cambridge surrounded by family. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on March 23, 1927 and was a daughter to Ida Barbara Maul Hinson and Robert D. Hinson.
When she was a child, Mrs. Hales’ family moved to Church Hill, MD and she graduated from Church Hill High School. She went on to attend Washington College and graduated from Goldey-Beacom College.
Mrs. Hales loved to sew and worked as a seamstress for many years for Richardson’s Style Shop and other clothing stores in Cambridge. She also worked from home making custom clothing, home décor, and alterations.
Mrs. Hales was a great lover of animals and over the years had numerous pets including cats, dogs and birds, as well as the many creatures brought home by her five children.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Cambridge, and enjoyed serving in the Flower Guild for many years. Mrs. Hales was a dedicated volunteer at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop and had also volunteered at the Richardson Maritime Museum.

Her husband, Granville Harrison Hales, Jr. whom she married on October 20, 1950, predeceased Mrs. Hales. Together they raised three daughters; Barbara “Bobbie” H. Gore (Bill, Jr.) of Cambridge, Richie H. Urtz (Tom) of Winchester, VA, Rachel H. Budd (Tim) of Cambridge; two sons Granville “Tuck” H. Hales III (Linda) of Hurlock and John R. Hales (Pat) of Cambridge. She is also survived by seven grandchildren Molly H. Spina (Brian), David H. Hales (Chela), Zeb Gore, Barbara Anne Gore, Harrison Budd, Morgan Budd, and Eliza Urtz, three step grandchildren Deana Wanex, Emily Fox and Amanda Craig, four great grandchildren Trent, Noah, Parker, Abigail Rose, six step great grandchildren Keller, Finn, Hardy, Jonah, Brooke and Amy and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a stepsister, Virginia Hinson.
Pallbearers will include members of Mrs. Hale’s family. Honorary pallbearers will include Eddie Moricle, Jimmy Moricle and Martin McDaniel.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 11 am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. with Rev. Christina Blake and Pastor Joel Beiler officiating. Interment will follow at Cambridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, P.O.
