Barbara Mae Fitzhugh, 91, of Cambridge passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 6, 2024 with her daughter Barbara Jackson and sister in law Louise Turner Prahl by her side. She was born on April 13, 1932 in Robbins and was the daughter of the late William Parks and Lorraine Robbins Abbott.
She was raised and attended schools in Dorchester County. On July 2, 1947 she married Omro Fitzhugh who passed away on May 27, 1991. Mrs. Fitzhugh worked with her son Donald W. Fitzhugh, owner of Backwoods Gardens, a florist and garden shop in Cambridge. She had worked for Rob Roy for 22 years. Mrs. Fitzhugh was a member of Chateau United Methodist Church and a member of AARP.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Jackson, two sisters Joy Hohlbein and Loretta Dibble and a sister-in-law Louise Turner Prahl, half-sisters and half-brothers Carolyn Simmons, Barbara Willey, Marie Dryden, Diane Jones, Harvey Abbott, Parks Abbott, James Abbott, and Wylie Abbott and several nieces and nephews. Beside her parents and her husband, Mrs. Fitzhugh is preceded in death by a son Donald “Donnie" Fitzhugh, three sisters Betty Hastings, Lottie King and Ramona Lankford, two brothers Harold Abbott and William Abbott, half sisters, Shirley Hicks and Darlene Spies.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 11am at Dorchester Memorial Park with Rev. Gary Hickman officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
