Barbara J. Murphy, 72, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2015 after a recent battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Washington, DC on November 3, 1942 and the only daughter of the late Donald Edwin Quade and Irene Moore Quade.

She graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD. She received her undergraduate degree at Towson State and went on to Salisbury State where she received her master’s degree in education. On June 20, 1964, she married John B. Murphy. She was an educator at heart and taught at various schools in Dorchester in positions that included teacher, principal and media specialist. Barbara was an avid reader and liked to travel. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and bible study. She volunteered at Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, Blackwater Refuge and Pleasant Day. Barbara was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Dorchester Educators.

She is survived by her husband John Murphy of Cambridge, a son Scott Murphy and wife Terri of Baltimore, four grandchildren Ben and Abbey Murphy of Baltimore, Quinn and Molly Murphy of New York. Besides her parents, Mrs. Murphy is preceded in death by a son Greg Murphy.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Christina Blake officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
