Betty M. Harrison, 91, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born in Cambridge on December 1, 1922 and was a daughter of the late Carlton H. and Xanthippe Lee Meekins.
She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1940. After graduation she was employed for a short time as a telephone operator at the C&P Telephone Company in Cambridge, She was later employed at different times at the Dorchester County Commissioners office and also the assessment office and the Dorchester County Court House. Betty had also worked for several years at the Cinderella Shop in Cambridge, had also worked at the front desk at the Quality Inn in Cambridge for eight years and also at Lednum's Jewelers for 15 years. She was a long time faithful member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, where she had been a Sunday school teacher for many years, and had also been active in several circles at Zion Church, the most recent being the Ruth Stewart Circle. Betty had also been an active member of the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, working at the Robin Hood Shop. She enjoyed working with crafts, knitting, crocheting and had also enjoyed being a member of the canasta club for many years. On May 29, 1981, she married C. Lee Harrison, who passed away on July 31, 2011.
She is survived by a son from a previous marriage Marion L. "Buck" Wheatley of Cambridge, five step children Peggy James of Cambridge, Joan Stump and husband Robert of Cambridge, Franklin Harrison and wife Barbara of Cambridge, James C. Harrison and Kathy Harrison both of Easton and William L. Harrison and wife Som of Augusta, GA, a nephew Bayly E. Smith, Jr. and wife Kathy and their daughter Lindsay Smith of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by 12 step grandchildren and 17 step great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by a son Jay Allen Wheatley, a daughter in law Shirley M. Wheatley, a brother in law Bayly E. Smith, and a sister M. Jane Smith.
Pallbearers will be John Lee Harrison, Michael Troy Ellis, Joseph Kincaid, Robert Bromwell, James C. Harrison, Jeff Phillips, John Edward James and Timothy John James.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 1p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge with Rev. William Davis and Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 and the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
