Betty L. Smith, 87 of Cambridge, passed away at her home on Wednesday May 27, 2009. She was born in Cambridge on July 17, 1921, and was a daughter of the late Howard Thomas and Eva Burton LeCompte.
She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938. On April 14, 1943 she was married to Dr. Russell P. Smith, Jr. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge and was also a member of the Cambridge Country Club, Cambridge Yacht Club, and Cambridge Lodge No 1272 B.P.O. E. She enjoyed painting landscapes and taking care of her family. She had been in failing health for several years when she passed away at her home on Wednesday morning.
Survivors include her husband Dr. Russell P. Smith, Jr., two sons Russell P. Rusty" Smith III of Cambridge and Barry L. Smith and his wife Anne S. Smith of East New Market, five grandchildren Mindy S. Carmine of East New Market, Shay Smith of Cambridge, Kim Waller of Salisbury, Russell P. Smith IV of College Park and Bruce E. Smith of Cambridge, four great grandchildren Ethan Carmine, Jerry Carmine, Shawn Carmine and Alex Waller and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters Geraldine Simmons and Lena Mae Applegarth and two brothers Howard T. LeCompte and Edward L. LeCompte.
A memorial service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Maryland Avenue in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Private interment will take place at the East New Market Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
