Betty Cheesman Wheatley, 80, of Hudson passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born in East New Market on December 22, 1932 and was a daughter of the late James M. Cheesman, Sr. and Mary Sellers Cheesman.

Betty attended schools in East New Market. On December 24, 1951, she married John L. Wheatley, who passed away on April 25, 1973. She retired from the Eastern Shore State Hospital in 2005. Betty loved her family, loved to cook, gardening, playing cards, puzzles and dominoes. She was kind and generous, always willing to lend a helping hand. Betty is loved and will be missed very much.

She is survived by two daughters Carol Lynn Wheatley of Cambridge and Laura Ruth Wheatley of Cambridge, two grandchildren Fulton Travis of Ocean City and John Travis of Salisbury, five sisters Agnes Edge of Cambridge, Shirley McCready of Cambridge, Hilda Gemeny of East New Market, Audrey Harding of East New Market and Dorothy Ruark of Fishing Creek and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Wheatley is preceded in death by two sisters Mary Phillips and Irene Layton, five brothers Clarence Elwood Cheesman, James M. Cheeseman, Jr., Albert Cheesman, William T. Cheesman, Sr. and Thomas Cheesman.

Pallbearers will be Fulton Travis, John Travis, Shawn Wingate, Mike Cheesman, Jessie Wineland and Steve Waldsachs. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Mareni and Sonny Ewell.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Spedden Seward Cemetery with Pastor George W. Wheatley, Jr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Neck District Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund, 945 Cooks Point Rd., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
