Betty Geraldine Yost, 85, formerly of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Born on March 21, 1925, she was the seventh of eight brothers and sisters born to Elzer N. Coates and Lila H. Fortney Coates in Steelton, PA. Growing up in Highspire, PA and graduated high school there in 1943. On April 11, 1944 she was married to Burrwood Yost, Sr. She loved to dance to the big bands of that era. Betty was gregarious, fun loving, always quick to smile and had an infectious laugh. Mrs. Yost spent most of her adult life in Cambridge, where she worked as a bookkeeper along side her husband, Bud, a watchmaker at Tubman's Jewelers. After Mr. Yost passed away in 1978, she continued to work at Tubman's until retiring in 1987. In 1993, she moved to St. Petersburg, FL where she lived until May of 2009; when she moved to Fernandina Beach, FL. Mrs. Yost loved her family and enjoyed returning every summer to the Coates Family Reunion in Pennsylvania. There she always entertained her many nieces and nephews with her stories. She will be sorely missed by all those who loved her. She is now at peace with the Lord.
Mrs. Yost is preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, Burrwood Yost, Sr., two brothers, Elzer N. Coates, Bernard L. Coates and two sisters, Hyacinth Q. Harder and Gladys Stipes.
She leaves behind, three sons, MAJ USA (Ret.) Burrwood Yost, Jr. ( Linda K. ) of Fernandina Beach, FL, Brian L. Yost ( Lucille ) of Bellingham, WA, Terry W. Yost of Showell, MD, a brother William Coates
(Marilyn ) of Madisonville, KY, two sisters Thelma Holmes of Harrisburg, PA, Bernadine McElheny of Highspire, PA, four grandchildren Phillip B. Yost of St. Petersburg, FL, Lara E. Burdack ( Paul ) of Tallahassee, FL, Brian Yost, Jr. ( Bambi ) of Church Creek, MD, Christian Yost of Showell, MD, a great grandson Koen R. Yost and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock with Rev. Michael Reddig officiating, as she is laid to rest beside her husband. Local arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, MD.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Knight's Funeral Home, Highspire, PA. Her family will receive friends on Saturday following the memorial service at the funeral home.
