Calvert C. Cannon

March 25, 1914 — February 14, 2014

Calvert Clarke Cannon, 99, of Fishing Creek, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2014, at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge, Maryland.

Born on Hoopers Island, Maryland, on March 25, 1914, he was the son of the late Preston Calvert Cannon and Nellie North Cannon.

On September 7, 1942, he married Emma Parks Cannon. They were married 50 years until she passed away on August 1, 1993.

Calvert was devoted to his family as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, but first and foremost was his love for the Lord and his church. He was a dedicated member of Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, serving the church for over 80 years in many capacities, including Sunday School Superintendent from 1937-2012, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher and Choir Director. He also designed the church education building and supervised the construction.

As owner and operator of the Calvert C. Cannon Marine Railway, he built and repaired numerous work and pleasure boats. In 1942, Calvert instructed boatbuilding classes for the United States Defense Training School. In addition to his love for boatbuilding, he enjoyed communicating as a licensed amateur radio operator. Calvert also loved music and was a member of the Hosier Quartet. Singing old familiar hymns brought him great joy.

He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Sonia Cannon Crandell and Gary L. Crandell of Salisbury, Maryland, and Shelley Cannon McCollister and Dennis E. McCollister of Cambridge, Maryland; four grandchildren, Jeffrey L. Crandell and his wife, Tiffany, of Redondo Beach, California, J. Ryan Crandell and his wife, Jessica, of Fruitland, Maryland, Matthew E. McCollister of Columbia, Maryland, and Lauren E. McCollister of Buies Creek, North Carolina; a great-grandson, Maddox James Crandell; two sisters-in-law, Ellen P. Ruark and her husband, Paul, and Sarah P. Phillips; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Angeline Phillips, three brothers-in-law, Robert W. Phillips, Benjamin L. Parks and George C. Parks, Jr., and two sisters-in-law, Rosa P. Lewis and Betty Jane Parks.

The family would like to thank all the staff and employees of Chesapeake Woods Center for their kindness and compassionate care.

The family will receive friends at Thomas Funeral Home, 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, Maryland 21613, on Friday, February 21, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, Fishing Creek, Maryland, with Rev. Jay Hurley officiating. Interment will follow in the Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge, Maryland.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey L. Crandell, J. Ryan Crandell, Matthew E. McCollister, Blair W. Phillips, Charles N. Davis and Brian K. Burton.

Memorial donations may be made to Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Priscilla McGlaughlin, P.O. Box 41, Fishing Creek, Maryland 21634.
