Calvert R. Townsend, Sr., 70, of East New Market passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury with his family by his side. He was born in Dorchester County on June 6, 1944 and was a son of the late Govey Calvert and Byrtle Wingate Townsend.
Calvert attended school at North Dorchester High School. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. On June 4, 1965, he married the former Mary Lou Greenhawk. Calvert was a mechanic for Dick Wanex, Tony Handley and Ripples Auto Parts. He also had worked for Preston Ford and Dorchester County Roads Board. Calvert enjoyed shucking oysters for his family and friends. He loved his dog Jack. Calvert was a member of the Hurlock American Legion Post 246 and the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW.
He is survived by his wife Mary Lou Townsend of East New Market, a son Calvert Townsend, Jr. and wife Juanita of Secretary, two daughters Tammy Hughes of Secretary and Angel Townsend of Preston, six grandchildren James Dyes III, Seth Burton, Chelsea Dyes, Hunter Burton, Aiden Hughes and Madison Lewis, a sister Martha Edge of Linkwood and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be James Dyes III, Seth Burton, Hunter Burton, Pat Boyd, David Boyd, and Bobby Legg.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Buddy Dunn officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
