Carlton R. Shorter, Sr., 81 of Golden Hill, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Thursday March 4, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on September 12, 1928, and was a son of the late Thurman M. and Margaret Meredith Shorter.
A He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945. On December 14, 1951 he was married to the former Mildred Gootee. As a young man he had worked on the family farm on Maple Dam Road, and had worked in the family sawmill business. He had worked at Cambridge wire Cloth for over 40 years and had retired in 1990. Mr. Shorter was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he had served as Treasurer and Trustee. Mr. Shorter was a former member of the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co. He had enjoyed gardening, hunting, wood working and making crafts. Mr. Shorter had been in failing health since November and had been Hospitalize for four weeks and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center since Saturday where he passed away on Thursday morning.
A Survivors include his wife Mildred M. Shorter of Golden Hill, one daughter Bonnie H. Marshall and her husband Nelson Marshall of Golden Hill, one son Carlton R. "Ricky" Shorter, Jr. and his wife Dawn of Town Point, three grandchildren Scot Marshall of Los Angeles, CA, Daniel Shorter and Eric Shorter both of Town Point and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Mary Beth Marshall, his step mother Rena Shorter, one brother Thurman Shorter, two sisters Eleanor Smith and Doris Wheatley.
A A A A A A A A A A A A A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at St. John's United Methodist Church at Golden Hill with the Rev. Gary Crouch officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining churchyard. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Doris K. Lewis, 3347 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, MD 21622. Pallbearers will be Eric Shorter, Daniel Shorter, Scot Marshall, Duane Paul, Billy Gootee and Henry Gootee. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
