Charles K. Schmitt

Charles K. Schmitt, 70, of Georgetown, DE passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury. He was born in Baltimore on September 12, 1954 to the late Edward Schmitt and Dora Manspeaker Schmitt.

Mr. Schmitt graduated from Caroline County Public Schools. He began his career on February 1, 1979 at the Caroline County Sheriff's Department and retired on February 2, 2004. In March of 2004, he began working as a Sergeant for the Greensboro Police Department and retired in September of 2016. During Mr. Schmitt’s time with the police force he was known as McGruff the Crime Dog and Deputy Dog. On May 20, 2016 Mr. Schmitt married the former Josephine Stubbs. He was a member of the Greensboro Fire Department, and a founding member of the Ruff Riders Horseback Riding Club. Mr. Schmitt was also a foster parent for over 12 years. After his retirement he enjoyed playing the guitar and singing Bluegrass.

He is survived by his wife Josephine Schmitt of Georgetown, DE, his children Larezza Truman, Charles Schmitt and wife Meg, Adam Schmitt, Maria Schmitt and fiancée April, Danielle Schmitt and companion Sydney, Ashley Antonio and partner Calvin and Juan Antonio and five grandchildren Christian, Devin and Haisley Schmitt and Cayde and Kalina Taylor.

Pallbearers will be Billy Asche, Billy Gardner, Jeff Jackson, Tom Sparks and members of the Caroline County Sheriff's Department.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 7, 2025 at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. from 10-11 AM, followed by a graveside service at 12:30 PM at Greensboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
