Charles W. Kelly, 99, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016 at UMSMC at Dorchester. He was born on Holland Island, February 15, 1917, and was the son of the late Charles P. and Rosa Walters Kelly. A few months after he was born, his family moved to Cambridge.
Mr. Kelly graduated from Cambridge High School in the Class of 1934. It was then that he started working at Craig’s Drug Store making deliveries on his bicycle. He was drafted in the U.S. Army to serve his country during WW II and was honorably discharged on May 23, 1945. When he returned from the service, Mr. Kelly attended University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy and graduated in 1949. He returned to Craig’s as a pharmacist and remained there as part owner with Mr. Earl Webster and friend Clarendon Gould. He continued to work at Craig’s helping his son Chuck, with the daily sales and deposits until he was 95 years old. On May 26, 1945, he married the former Dorothy Weedon, who passed away on September 11, 1960. On October 14, 1961, he married the former Janet Phillips, who passed away on December 26, 1998. Mr. Kelly served on the Dorchester County Board of Education from 1966 to 1977, and on the board of directors for F&M Bank and later, the Advisory Board of the 1st National Bank of Maryland. He was a life member of Choptank Memorial Post 7460, Disabled Veterans, and Alumni of University of Maryland Pharmacy School. Mr. Kelly was also a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cambridge Yacht Club, American Legion Post 91, Cambridge Lodge #66 A.F. & A.M., Cambridge Elks Lodge, Cambridge Skeet and Gun Club and an honorary member of Cambridge Rescue Fire Company.
He is survived by two sons Charles “Chuck” W. Kelly, and wife Karen of Cambridge and Richard L. Kelly and wife Kathy of Cambridge, a daughter Jennifer K. Grier and husband Lee of Cambridge, eight grandchildren Charles "Chuckie" W. Kelly, Jr., Stephen Kelly, Jacquelyn Kelly, Susan Collins, Shawna Kelly, Collin Grier, Kevin Grier and Sean Grier, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many special friends, including, Vivian Owens. Besides his parents and wives, Mr. Kelly is preceded in death by a sister Mazie K. Wroten.
Pallbearers will be Chuckie Kelly, Stephen Kelly, Collin Grier, Kevin Grier, Sean Grier and Aaron Collins. Honorary pallbeaers will be Dennis Hurley and Lee Grier.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 1 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Bonnie Shively officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 11 to 1 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 91, 601 Radiance Drive, Cambridge, MD 21613, Choptank Memorial Post 7460, 115 Sandy Hill Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 205 Maryland Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
