He attended schools in Cambridge. Charles entered the U.S. Army at the age of 17. In 1941 he was sent to Iceland to allow British troops to go fight in North Africa. In August of 1943 his unit was assigned to Ireland and shortly after D-Day he was sent to France where he served with Patton's Third Army. He served in the Ardennes and the Rhineland. In February of 1945 his unit crossed into Germany rescuing troops who had been trapped in the Bulge. When Germany surrendered in April of 1945 Charles was in Czechoslovakia. In July of 1945 he returned to New York on the liner Empress of Ireland. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars. On September 29, 1946 he was married to the former Gladys Willey. He had worked as an electrician for John W. Tieder for over 30 years. Charles enjoyed fishing, crabbing and spending time at his cottage at Deep Point. He had been in failing health for the past six months when he passed away at his home on Sunday morning.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Gladys W. Mills of Cambridge, one brother Ralph Mills and his wife Mary Mills of Mechanicsville, MD. His is also survived by a sister in law Flossie Brohawn of Cambridge and a brother in law Jack Willey of Cambridge, six nieces Karen Mills Webster of Reisterstown, Lois Mills of Cambridge, Tammy Parisi of Glen Arm, MD, Susan Dickinson of Linkwood, Mary Ann Hurley of Cambridge and Terry Robbins of Cambridge, two nephews Martin Mills of Hampton, Virginia and Keith Mills of Hughesville, MD and many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers Melvin Mills, Louis Mills and William Mills.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Dorchester Memorial Park with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. There will be no visitation. There will be a time of food and fellowship at Chateau Community Church after the service. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
