Clara L. McKnett

Clara L. McKnett, 95, of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Vienna on October 10, 1916 and was a daughter of the late William H. and Bessie Neal Layton.

Mrs. McKnett attended and graduated from Vienna High School class of 1935. On August 1, 1940, she married Charles J. McKnett who passed away on August 29, 1980. She worked for several local sewing factories for 20 years. Mrs. McKnett was an avid quilt maker. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter Mildred McKnett of Cambridge, a sister Louise Norris of Cambridge and a brother Ollie Layton of East New Market and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by very dear friends Donna McConnell, Jennifer and Joshua Simmons and their children Douglas, Jeffrey and Matthew. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. McKnett is preceded in death by a daughter Shirley Wheatley, a sister Hilda Willey and two brothers Walter Layton and Joseph Layton.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at East New Market Cemetery with Mr. Joshua Simmons officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Joseph H. Layton, Jr., 4448 New Bridge Road, Vienna, MD 21869.
