C. Mace Thomas

June 19, 1926 — April 22, 2017

On April 22, 2017, Carroll Mace Thomas, 90, passed peacefully at Chesapeake Woods in Cambridge, where he had been a resident since March.  He was “hatched” in Hudson on June 19, 1926, and was the son of the late Carroll W. and Estelle M. Thomas.  At eleven years old he worked in the family’s country store in Hudson, which was later known as Lewis Store.  Mace often said, “Growing up in a country store was an invaluable education…a great way to grow up.”  He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1943, with 11 years perfect attendance.  Upon graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force, trained as a B-17 tail gunner, and was stationed in Laredo, Texas.  In 1946, along with his father and brother, Henry, they established one of the first Southern States Cooperatives on the Delmarva Peninsula.  On March 24, 1952, he married Doris Depew and they had four children. The Thomas family was always engaged in real estate since the early 1900’s.  In 1962, Mace established Choptank Real Estate and remained active until his retirement.  Mace was quick to smile and had an easy-going demeanor, along with a quick wit.  Many days were spent having coffee in the morning with “the boys” and making trips to the racetrack in the evening.  He enjoyed dancing, story and joke telling, and had a passion for “buying and selling” anything but especially cars…so much so that he often referred to himself as a “frustrated used car salesman.”  He liked boating and fishing with his family and friends.  He loved to travel and took numerous trips with Marian Slacum and their friends, Bob and Helen Davis.  He was a good son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, devoting his entire life to his family.  Mace attended Baraca Class at Grace United Methodist Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 91, Cambridge Yacht Club, and honorary member of RFC.

Besides his parents, Mace was preceded in death by his only brother, Henry.  He is survived by his children, Gage Thomas, Clark Thomas(Margaret), Diana Gray(David), and Kent Thomas(Lita); Eight grandchildren, Chelsea, Blake, and Brooke Thomas, Aubrey(Ryan), Carly, and Shane Vincent, Wesley and Samantha Thomas; One great-granddaughter, Ava Kenton; a sister-in-law, Ellen Bailey(Ray); nephews, Eddie Thomas and Kevin Bailey; nieces:  Kate Bailey and Kristen Christensen.

Expressions of sympathy can be made in his memory to:   Pleasant Day Medical Adult Daycare, 2474 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD  21613 or Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Shore Regional Office, 909 Progress Circle, Suite 400, Salisbury, MD  21804

The family will have a private celebration of his life at a later date.
