Cora E. Gilliard, 83, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born on August 19, 1926 in Church Creek and was a daughter of the late Bannamen and Inez Fitzhugh Elzey.
Mrs. Gilliard attended schools in Church Creek. She was married to Ernest L. Gilliard, Jr. He passed away on February 5, 1965. She worked for Bogash as a seamstress, Taste Freeze and later worked as a dietary aide at Mallard Bay Care Center. Mrs. Gilliard enjoyed sewing, making dolls and bowling. In her earlier years, she enjoyed go cart racing. She attended Grace United Methodist Church where she also attended Dr. Hines Bible Class.
She is survived by two sons Tony Martin Gilliard and wife Jane of Cambridge and Dennis Gilliard and wife Sandy of Secretary, five grandchildren Tony "Bunky" Gilliard, Jr., Kevin Gilliard, Heather Gilliard, Lisa Gilliard Harrison and Valerie Cox, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by two brothers Emory Elzey and Warren Elzey and two sisters Wilsie Herd and Betty Lou Harrison.
Pallbearers will be Bunky Gilliard, Kevin Gilliard, John Harrison, Daniel Cox, Eugene Harper and Keith Howard.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
