D. James "Jim" Herbert, Jr. 61, of Church Creek, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, NY. He was born on October 5, 1947 to Donald Herbert and Eugenia Lutz Herbert in Baltimore, MD but otherwise lived in Dorchester County his entire life.
He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1965. He was employed by National Can Corporation, Ray Davis Well Drilling, Maryland Wire Belts, Cambridge South Dorchester High School as Building Engineer and currently as Administrator for Dorchester County Sanitary District where he served as Chairman for many years. He was a member of Old Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as acolyte and sung in the choir, White Haven United Methodist Church where he at one time served as Treasurer, Chairman of the Trustees and Member of the Administrative Board, Sons of the American Legion, Citizen's Advisory Board of Morning Star Youth Academy and current member of the Town Council of Church Creek, the Citizens Planning Commission and Streetscape Committee and was instrumental in final approval of the Madison-Woolford Sewer Project.
He was married September 30, 1967 to his high school sweetheart, the former Sheila Jones. In addition to his wife he is survived by son Jason Christopher Herbert, Sr., daughter Heather Lynn Robbins and husband Gregory, four grandchildren Gregory Robbins, Jr., Jason Christopher Herbert, Jr., Amanda Lynn Herbert and Emily Nicole Robbins, three brothers whom he enjoyed spending time with, Robert Herbert, John Herbert and wife Cheryl and Alan Herbert and wife Lisa and several nieces and nephews.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. In recent years some of his best times were "breakfast with his buddies" where they discussed politics and settled all the affairs of the world. He loved to cook and participated in cooking for the American Legion, Hooper's Island Fire Company, Grand National, White Haven Church to name a few but was happiest cooking for his own family gatherings. He enjoyed coaching football and baseball for many years at Cambridge South Dorchester High School.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 2 p.m. at White Haven United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to White Haven United Methodist Church, c/o Jeanne Ewell, 5134 Paw Paw Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
