Donald W. "Stu" Haring, 73 of Trappe, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Friday, April 9, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on January 14, 1937, and was a son of the late A. Stuart "Snuffy" and Doris Wheeler Haring.
He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1955. On February 14, 1960 he was married to the former Patricia Yates. Stu went to work at Dan Garner & Co. in Cambridge at the age of 15. Stu remained with the company for 52 years and owned the business for 20 years, and had retired in 2004. As a young man he played drums and had played in the Baraca Band at Grace United Methodist Church and had also played in several local bands. He had served in the MD Army National Guard Co B 2nd BN 115th Infantry for six years. For several years he had worked part time at Kool Ice & Seafood. He was an Active member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc for 25 years where he had served as Secretary and Treasurer, Vice President and President and had also served as Captain and Lieutenant of Engine Co. 304, and also served as Lieutenant and Captain of the ambulance Corps. In 1983 he was awarded the Fireman of the Year award. Stu was a Life member of Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E. and as well as he was a member of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. Stu had served on the Trappe Planning & Zoning Commission for several years. He enjoyed gardening as well as fishing. He also looked forward to his trip each year to the Caribbean. Stu had been in failing health for the past several months when he passed away at his home on Friday evening.
Survivors include his wife Patricia Y. Haring of Trappe, one daughter D. Gail Lesser and her husband Jan Lesser of Charlottesville, VA, two grandchildren Ryan S. Lesser and Eric B. Lesser, one sister Judy H. Zemko of Sebring, Florida, one brother Michael L. Haring and his wife Carole W. Haring of Cambridge, one niece Lisa Hanley and two great nieces.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, April 17 at 11:00 AM at Zion United Methodist Church on Locust Street in Cambridge with the Rev. William Davis and the Rev. Nevin Crouse officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601. Pallbearers will be Ryan Lesser, Eric Lesser, Roger Eareckson, Norman Fegel, Richard Hargis, Jan Lesser, Toby Wilson, Tom Wilson and Hank Kamens. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Mahmood Shariff, Tommy Collins, Mark Cropper, Dr. Jeevan Errabolu and Dickie Collins.
