Donald L. Richardson

Donald L. Richardson, 87, of Cambridge passed away at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore on Sunday, September 26, 2010. He was born in Church Creek on February 2, 1923 and was a son of the late Donald and Lucille Dunnock Richardson. A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A Mr. Richardson attended the first seven years of school at Church Creek Elementary and graduated from Cambridge High School Class of 1940. He also graduated from Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, DE with an AA Degree in Accounting/Business Administration. He graduated from The Chevrolet School of Modern Merchandising and Management in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Richardson owned and operated the former Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealership B.J. Linthicum's in Cambridge until he sold the business in 1980.

Mr. Richardson served in the U.S. Army, where he was a combat veteran of World War II as a staff sergeant with the 29th Infantry Division, Company B 175th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. His battles and Campaigns include Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Richardson was honorably discharged from the service on December 15, 1944.

On August 13, 1954 he was married to the former Norma Lee Ruark.

He was a member of the Taylor's Island United Methodist Church, where he was a member of its administrative board. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 91, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dorchester County Historical Society, Cambridge Elks Lodge, Cambridge Moose, Old Trinity Association, Tidewater Farm Club, Dorchester County Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association and a honorary member of both the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Fire Company. Mr. Richardson was a member of the Cambridge Rotary Club, where he received the club's Lifetime Achievement Award for his 39 years of perfect attendance and two time Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his wife Norma Lee Richardson of Cambridge and many cousins. Besides his parents, Mr. Richardson is preceded in death by a brother Hazelton Earl Richardson.

Pallbearers will be Ed Lynch, Gary Pinder, Ray McElroy, Teri Griffith, Adam Kelly, Darrian Bromwell, Larry Dail, Richard Messick and Jim LeGates. Honorary pallbearers will be John White, Walter Tanner, Wendell Foxwell, William Moosegian and Stanley Tall.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Whitehaven United Methodist Church in Church Creek with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge and from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the church.
