Doris A. Brighton, 92, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born in Neptune City, NJ on April 21, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Chester and Ada Hankins Slocum. She was married to her late husband Lt Col. James Brighton for 70 Years.
Mrs. Brighton attended Aerial Lake Academy in Pennsylvania. She received her pilot’s license, at age 16, and was one of New Jersey’s first women pilots. During WWII she was recruited by Jackie Cochran to fly for the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs). Later in 1955 she completed nursing school in Pensacola, FL and practiced nursing in five states as well Japan. She always enjoyed traveling, flower arranging, and baking.
She is survived by two sons James Brighton and wife Jane of Cambridge and Jack Brighton and wife Joanne of Dover, DE, two grandchildren James Brighton and wife Colleen and Susan Banks and husband Daniel, two great grandchildren Samuel and William Banks, and her older brother Eldon Slocum of Leeds, NY.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Cambridge Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 3105 Mallard Court, Cambridge, MD 21613 with Pastor Cesar Gonzalez officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Cambridge where she was a member. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
