Doris V. Fitzhugh, 82, of East New Market passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Andrews on April 28, 1929 and was a daughter of the late William H. and Meely Mills Andrews.
Mrs. Fitzhugh attended schools at Andrews Elementary and Crapo High. On August 25, 1945 she married Arthur C. "Blackie" Fitzhugh and he passed away on June 28, 2000. She worked from 1954 to 1962 at Rob Roy Shirt Factory and from 1962 to 1992 she worked at Airpax. After, her husband passed away, she went to Florida in the winter months and stayed at her sister Bettye, where she volunteered at the King Center, Melbourne Church and the Park Community Hall. She enjoyed antiques, flea markets, puzzle books, quilting, gardening and traveling. Mrs. Fitzhugh was well known for her homemade lemon and chocolate meringue pies and coconut cakes. She was a volunteer at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center and worked with the Tuesday girl's. In 2005, the Eastern Shore Hospital Center Auxiliary nominated her for the Maryland Most Beautiful Person from Dorchester County and she received second place. She was a member Eastern Shore Hospital Auxiliary, Church Creek VFC Ladies Auxiliary, White Haven United Methodist Church for 50 years, where she held numerous responsibilities, the Ladies Group of White Haven Church, where she held the office of president for 25 years. She was also a member of the National AARP.
She survived by two daughters Betty Ann Hurley and husband Frank of East New Market and Diann Emerson and husband Ed of Church Hill, a granddaughter Heather Emerson- Phillips and husband Jason of Church Hill, a sister Bettye A. Pitcock of Melbourne, FL, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by pet Daisy. Besides her parents and her husband she is preceded in death two sisters Lydia Booze and Ruzzie Crandell.
Pallbearers will be Frank Hurley, Ed Emerson, Bobby Brooks, Donnie Moore, Howard Brohawn and Harold Ringgold. Honorary pallbearers will be member of the Eastern Shore Hospital Auxiliary and Church Creek VFC Ladies Auxiliary.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at noon at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the White Haven United Methodist Church, c/o Jeanne Ewell, 5134 Paw Paw Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
