Doris D. Thomas, 84, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She was born in Cambridge on January 19, 1932 and was a daughter of the late Howard E. and Loretta Scheer Depew.
Ms. Thomas graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1949. In March 1952, she married C. Mace Thomas and they had 4 children. She was a bookkeeper for several businesses including C.W. Thomas and Sons, a Southern States Cooperative and later at Cambridge Tractor Company. She was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church and its Eunice Sluyter Circle. Ms. Thomas spent many hours volunteering…at Zion soup days, various church dinners and fundraisers, as a docent for Dorchester County Historical Society and The Richardson Museum, as an assistant with Talbot Special Riders, as well as a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was a member of South Dorchester Folk Museum, Dorchester County Historical Society, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Tidewater Farm Club and supported the Waterfowl Festival. She enjoyed getting together with her classmates (the 49ers), playing bridge, and working in her yard. She enjoyed time on the water and had a passion for lighthouses. Doris loved her family unconditionally and was always there to support and help whenever needed.
She is survived by her children Gage Thomas (Parthana), Clark Thomas (Margaret), Diana Gray (David), Kent Thomas (Lita), eight grandchildren Chelsea, Blake and Brooke Thomas, Aubrey, Carly and Shane Vincent, Wesley and Samantha Thomas, and two step grandchildren Anna and Michael Cannon, a sister Ellen Bailey (Ray), nephew Kevin Bailey, nieces Kate Bailey and Kristen Christensen of Bonner Springs, KS, and her companion of many years, Allen Fitzhugh.
Pallbearers will be Gage Thomas, Kent Thomas, Wesley Thomas, Shane Vincent, Kevin Bailey, and Ryan Kenton.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. William Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the South Dorchester Folk Museum, P.O.
