Douglas W. “Turkle” North, 76, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at UMSMC at Dorchester. He was born in Cambridge on May 14, 1940 and was a son of the late Milton Davis North and Louise Wheatley North.
Turkle graduated from Cambridge High School. He was a watermen most of his life, serving on the Oyster Committee for many years, a charter member of the Watermen’s Association, and worked at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Turkle enjoyed working in his shop and loved to cut grass. He was first married to Lee Sanzone Hudson and later in September of 1982, he married the former Mildred Hurley.
He is survived by his wife Mildred North, a daughter from his first marriage Marie Davis and husband Rob, a stepson Ricky Hubbard and his friend Jimmy Keyes all of Cambridge, a grandson Robert Davis, a great granddaughter Katherine Davis and her mother Deanna Parker and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Turkle was preceded in death by a brother Davis North.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Spedden, Frankie Peters, Gene Bright, Herbie Messick, Larry Dail, Jamie Doehlert and Richard Wilson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11 am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, 213 N. Talbot Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663 or to Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 to help defray funeral expenses.
