Dr. John W. Scanlon, Jr

John W. Scanlon, Jr. MD, 75, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at his home. He was born in Yonkers, NY on September 28, 1939 and was the son of the late John W. and Mary Drohan Scanlon.

Dr. Scanlon graduated from Yonkers High School class of 1957. He also graduated from Columbia College in 1961 and Boston University School of Medicine in 1965. On December 28, 1968, he married the former Kathleen Burns. Dr. Scanlon held his residence at Harvard Pediatric Residency Program at Mass General Hospital and at Fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital. He moved to Washington, DC and was Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Columbia Hospital for Women from 1975 to 1995. He was a tenured professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University. In 1995, he retired to Cambridge full time.

He was a member of the Midshore Fetal Infant Mortality Review from 2000 to the present, on the board of directors of Talbot Retriever Club, a Dorchester County Representative & life member of Maryland Waterfowlers Association, on the board of directors of Stripers Forever, president of the Grand National Waterfowl Association in 2002 and on the board of directors until 2013, on the Dorchester Center of the Arts from 1999 to 2009 and rejoined the board in July 1, 2014. He was also a member of the Dorchester Coastal Conservation Association and a life member of Trout Unlimited.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Kathleen, sons John and James Scanlon, daughters Kathleen Opie, Kellie Renich and Erin Kaufman, grandchildren Jenifer Opie, Patrick Opie, Conner Opie, Stephanie Renich, Suzanne Renich, Kathleen Renich, Ryan Kaufman, Michael Scanlon, Peter Scanlon and Amy Scanlon and a sister Anita Dellaferra.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. William Davis officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Stripers Forever, P.O. Box 2781, South Portland, ME 04116-2781. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
