Edith S. (Stewart) Hurley

Edith Stewart Hurley, 98, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 at her home. She was born in Andrews on August 12, 1920 and was a daughter of the late George Thomas Stewart and Ruth Wallace Stewart.

Mrs. Hurley graduated from Crapo High School class of 1937. She also attended Strayer Business School in Baltimore. On July 29, 1941, she married Jesse Watson Hurley, who passed away on June 11, 1994. Mrs. Hurley worked for Sears for 10 years and 26 years for Dorchester County Health Department as a Lab Technician and retired in June 30, 1980. She enjoyed traveling, playing the slots, reading, crossword puzzles and yard work.

Mrs. Hurley was a member of Bucktown United Methodist Church, and served as communion steward. She was also a member of Oak Grove Church, AARP and Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, where she worked at the information desk and at the Robin Hood Shop. Mrs. Hurley was also a former member of the Zion United Methodist Church, former member and past president and secretary of Ladies Oriental Shore Club of the Eastern Shore, a former member and past matron of Minerva Chapter #50 –Eastern Star, where she was a 50 year member and a life member of Roelma Chapter #113.

She is survived by a niece Deborah S. Stewart of Cambridge, a caregiver B.B. Ross and numerous cousins. Besides her parents, Mrs. Hurley is preceded in death by her only child at birth on November 16, 1942 and a brother G. Wallace Stewart.

Pallbearers will be Randy Jones, Tyler Jones, David Thomas, Jr., Kenneth R. Thomas, Jr., William Robinson and Wallace Dodson.

A Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 12:45, followed by a funeral service at 1 pm will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 1 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Mary Ann Farnell and Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
