Eldred "Satch" Jones

December 9, 1944 — August 13, 2012

Eldred Albert Jones, known as "Satch" by his family and friends, 67, of Cambridge passed away at his home with his family by his side on August 13, 2012. Born, December 9th, 1944 he was the son of the late Olive "Sis" Creighton Guthrie and the late Wilson Bennett Jones.

He was raised on Hooper's Island where he attended Hooper's Island Elementary and South Dorchester High School. On May 14th, 1965 he married the former Beverly Jane Ewell. For many years they made their home on Hooper's Island, where Satch worked on the water and they raised their family. Having been raised on Hooper's Island he began his career as a young waterman at the age of twelve working with his brother Ronnie Jones. By the age of 20 he was operating his own vessel working the waters year round providing for his wife and children. He continued to work the water until his health began to decline approximately 1995. He also worked on the construction of the Calvert Cliffs Power Plant and maintained the Hooper's Island Gunning Club during the earlier years. After retiring as a waterman, he worked at Coldwater Seafood Company in maintenance until he finally retired in 2002 due to his health.

Satch enjoyed playing softball and he coached and managed the 315 Market softball team of Hooper's Island for many years. He loved the water and enjoyed crabbing, fishing and all of it bounties. He was an avid NASCAR and stock car racing fan. He was very proud of his children and grandsons and looked forward to attending all their sporting events. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his five grandsons and his many friends. He attended the Wesleyan Church in Hooper's Island and after their move to Cambridge in 1987 he attended Friendship United Methodist Church in Aireys.

Besides his loving wife Beverly of 47 years, he is survived by his son, Jay Eldred Jones and his wife Maricarole of Cambridge; daughter, Debbie Jones Walker and her husband, Robbie of Hurlock; five grandsons, Justin Jones, Jason Jones, Drew Walker, Garrett Walker and Grant Walker; Sister Joyce Jones Bromwell of Cambridge; sister-in-law Betty Ann Jones of Hooper's Island; sister-in-law Brenda Ewell Bloodsworth of Cambridge; brother-in-law, Perry Ewell, Jr. and his wife Carol of North Carolina; brother-in-law Bobby Ewell and his wife Lynda of Virginia; an uncle, Donald Jones, Sr; an aunt, Betty Lea Parks; two step-sisters, Blanche Thompson and Juanita Paterno and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olive Creighton Guthrie and Wilson Jones; a brother, Ronnie Bennett Jones, a step-father, Howard "Boo" Guthrie; and a nephew, Mark Ewell. He was respected and loved by his family and many friends he will be dearly missed by all.

Pallbearers will be Justin Jones, Jason Jones, Drew Walker, Billy Parks, Johnny Parks, Scott McGlaughlin, Reggie Bromwell, Jr. and Mike Ewell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dorsey Shockley, Jimmy Simmons, Irvin Rippons, Jr., Earl Guillion, Charles Gore, Bobby Murphy, Leroy Bell, Gee McClain and Harry Phillips.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 12 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
