Eleanor Dashiell Asplen, 102, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born in Dorchester County on February 4, 1910 and was a daughter of the late William F. and Mary Navy Dashiell.
She attended and graduated from schools in Dorchester County. On February 12, 1930 she married Harold L. Asplen, who passed away on September 10, 1986. She worked side by side with her husband in the farming business in which she continued farming until her death. Mrs. Asplen was a very colorful soul and could be seen throughout, feeding the birds at Long Wharf and other Cambridge locations. She obtained her pilots license during WWII, in case her skills would be needed to defend her country. She enjoyed working, loved animals and gardening. She also loved sharing her vegetables with her friends and listening to the Baraca broadcast. She was a member of the Farm Bureau.
She is survived by several local extended family members Charles Edmondson, Jr. of Cambridge, Brian Edmondson of Kent Island and Medora Dashiell Sheehan of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by Beverly Era, whom she considered as a granddaughter and many other close friends. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Asplen is preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters, two nephews Judge Charles Edmondson and Hamilton Dashiell and her beloved dog Cocoa.
Pallbearers will be Billy Beckwith, Charles Robinson, Jack Faulkner, Daniel Luthy, Phil Era and Donald Bell. Honorary pallbearers will be Mabel Stevens, Beverly Robinson, Ann Gullette and Ida Mae Macer.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Jay Hurley officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Rev. Jay's Cross Outreach Ministry or the Baraca Class, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to a local humane society of one's choice.
