Elizabeth Meredith (Betty) (Meredith) Mills

Elizabeth Meredith (Betty) Mills, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 14, 2018, at the home of her son in Springfield, Illinois.  Betty, the daughter of Thomas V, Meredith and Florence Bradley Meredith was born on August 15, 1922 in Cambridge, MD.  She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1940 and married Reginald S. (Tete) Mills in 1941.  Betty worked for several local doctors, but when her husband died in 1962, she pursued her dream of becoming a registered nurse and began her formal nursing training.  She was a coronary care nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, as well as at Cambridge Maryland Hospital. She also worked at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center and served as a public health nurse in Charles County.

Betty joined Grace United Methodist Church as a teenager and was active there in many capacities until her health declined.  She loved music and enjoyed being active in the choir for more than 65 years.  Betty sang throughout the county at weddings, funerals, hymn sings and homecomings. Often she sang with her four children.

Betty is survived by her children: Carolyn Foskey (Milton) of Seaford, DE; Marilyn Todd (Douglas) of Cambridge; Reginald Mills (Judi) of Springfield, IL; and Joanne Rue (David) of Cambridge. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Doug Todd (Mary), Amy Vasey (Steve), Ted Mills (Kendra), Richard Mills (Dawn), Regi Pifer-Mills (Beth), Denny Todd (Kerry), Katie Paul (Aaron), and Zachary Rue, as well as, nine great-grandchildren, and a sister, Anna Ruth Penn, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by six brothers: Thomas, John, Le Roy, Sheldon, McKinney, and Ronald Meredith.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Christina Blake officiating.  Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.  Pallbearers will be Mrs. Mills’ grandchildren.
