Elizabeth B. Sellers

Elizabeth B. Sellers, 96 of Vienna, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Monday July 6, 2009. She was born at Bucktown on May 7, 1913, and was a daughter of the late W.T. and Bernice Collison Banning.

She attended schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1929, and was the last remaining member of her class, which was the last class to graduate from the Cambridge Seminary, which was located at the foot of the Cambridge Creek Bridge. Starting in the fall of l929 she commuted by steamboat from Cambridge to Baltimore to attend Strayer College as a secretarial student. On December 25, 1934 she was married to G. Emerson Sellers. After they were married they made their home in Salem for several years, and in 1938 they moved to Vienna. Mr. Sellers passed away on October 28, 1991. Mrs. Sellers had been a member of the Vienna United Methodist Church for the past 71 years, where she had been a member of the United Methodist Women and was a Sunday School Teacher and Church Treasurer for many decades. She had worked in the Phillips Hardware Co. offices, and also as a Dorchester Co. School bus driver. She later worked at Vienna Elementary School in the cafeteria. Mrs. Sellers had been active in the PTA with both of her sons and had been awarded a life membership in the PTA. She had been in failing health for the past six weeks and had been a patient at the Dorchester General Hospital since Friday where she passed away on Monday morning.

Survivors include two sons Vernon W. Sellers and his wife Faye D. Sellers of Cambridge and George W. Sellers his wife Priscilla V. Sellers, four grandchildren Sandra Thomas and her husband Larry Thomas of Hummelston, PA., Susan Averill and her husband Paul Averill of Williston, VT, Philip Sellers and his wife Linda Sellers of Salisbury and Andrew Sellers and his wife Julie Sellers of Fishers, IN, 8 great grandchildren Meredith Thomas, Adam Thomas, Joshua Thomas, Timothy Averill, Emilee Averill, Elaina Sellers, Wyatt Sellers, Evan Sellers, two step great grandchildren Cody Perdue and his wife Ashley Perdue of Pittsville and Connor Davis and one step great great grandchild Riley Perdue. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers Guy Banning, Ernest Banning and Fred Banning.

A funeral service will be held on Friday morning at 11:00 AM at the Vienna United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Bongard and the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Vienna United Methodist Church Memorial Fund c/o Mary Lee Bradshaw, P.O. Box 212, Vienna, MD 21869 or to the Vienna VFC Ambulance Fund, C/o Andrea Outten, P.O. Box 291, Vienna, MD 21869. Pallbearers will be Larry Thomas, Paul Averill, Philip Sellers, Andrew Sellers, Adam Thomas, Joshua Thomas and Timothy Averill. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
