Esther B. Clay, 81 of East New Market, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Monday, April 5, 2010. She was born at Frederick, MD on February 12, 1929, and was a daughter of the late William and Minnie Kuhn Bierly.
She attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School. She was first married to Herman E. Clay on June 11, 1947. He passed away on June 22, 1986. She was later married to Dorsey L. Bankard who passed away on October 19, 2002. Mrs. Clay had worked with her husband operating Clay's TV in Cambridge for 13 years. Mrs. Clay had worked as a bookkeeper and also a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, doing needlework and also oil painting. Mrs. Clay was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Cambridge, and was very proud of the fact that she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the General Perry Benson Chapter NSDAR. She had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge since November of 2008 where she passed away on Monday afternoon.
Survivors include two daughters Diana Jackson and her husband Phil Jackson, Sr. of Cambridge, and Susan Hutson of Bridgeville, DE, one son Richard E. Clay and his wife Mary Clay of East New Market, MD, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husbands she was preceded in death by a son Roy Edward Clay, and a brother Richard Schnoor.
A graveside service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Old Trinity Churchyard with the Rev. Joan P. Evans and the Rev. George Hufnagel officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Sunnyside Alliance Church, P.O. Box 9, Secretary, MD 21664. Pallbearers will be Philip Jackson, Sr., Philip Jackson, Jr., Martin Schnoor, Paul M. Jackson, David M. Hurley and Andrew E. Clay.
