Esther M. Hurley, 94, of Cambridge passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born at Maple Dam on September 5, 1915 and was a daughter of the late August G. and Bessie May Windsor Meyer.
Ms. Hurley was raised and attended school in Dorchester County. She had worked for Western Auto and later at Cambridge Office Supply and Airpax. Ms. Hurley also worked as a sitter. She enjoyed painting, sewing and crocheting. She was a lifetime member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, the Women's Guild and the auxiliary at Dorchester General Hospital.
She is survived by four daughters Marilyn Luthy of Cambridge, Phyllis Murphy of Cambridge, Jane Brasure of Salisbury and Jo Ann Bourne of Eldersburg, a son James W. Hurley of Nokomis, FL, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, two sisters Bessie Nield of Severna Park and Mary Moore of Pounding, WV, two brothers Pastor Donald G. Meyer of Laurel, DE and Windsor Meyer of Bridgeville, DE and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ms. Hurley is preceded in death by four sisters Amelia Mills, Sarah Bradshaw, Clara Handy and Dorothy Henry, four brothers Perry F. Meyer, William Alvin Meyer, Phillip Meyer, August M. Meyer and David Meyer. Pallbearers will be John Luthy III, Mark Luthy, Daniel Luthy, C.R. Murphy, Jr., Dean Brasure, Scott Simmons and Andrew Bourne.A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 with Rev. Joan P. Evans and Pastor Donald G. Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
