Eugene F. Creighton, 101, of Cambridge went home to be with our Lord on Thursday, November 12, 2015. He was born in Marion Station, MD on May 25, 1914, the son of the late Arthur and Ethel Creighton.
He attended schools on Hoopers Island before joining the merchant vessel fleet of Phillips Packing Company. He served as crew, first-mate and finally Captain of the cargo ships “Amos” and “Popeye”. He joined the US Army in 1941 and served in the infantry in Germany and France during World War II and the post-war occupation. On returning to the United States, he joined the staff at the Cambridge Office Supply Company before returning to the family business on Hoopers Island as a waterman. He was married to the former Adeline Pritchett of Greenesboro, MD for 69 years prior to her passing on February 2, 2012. He enjoyed family, friends, hunting, fishing and baseball. Mr. Creighton was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 91, Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW, and the 29th Infantry Division Association.
He is survived by his son Colonel (Ret) Barry F. Creighton and wife Judy Cox Creighton of Virginia Beach, VA, two grandsons Geoffrey Creighton and wife Jennifer of Leesburg, VA and Scott Creighton and wife Katie of Baltimore, a granddaughter Laura Creighton of Washington, DC, and five great grandsons Noah, Ethan and Elijah Creighton of Leesburg, VA, Jack and William Creighton of Baltimore.
The immediate family will have a private interment at the Maryland Veterans’ Cemetery. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 11AM - 1PM at Old Salty’s on Hoopers Island. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street PO Box 815, Cambridge, MD. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, PA, in Cambridge.
