Everett P. Creighton, Jr., 93, former Vice President of Manufacturing at Cambridge Wire Cloth Company, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Chesapeake Woods Center. He was born on August 8, 1921 in Cambridge, the son of Everett P. Creighton, Sr. and Mildred Kirby Creighton. He was raised at 210 West End Avenue and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938.
Everett joined Cambridge Wire Cloth as a welder in May, 1941. He served as Supervisor of the Fabrication Department, Plant Manager and in 1971, became Vice President of Manufacturing and a Director. He held these positions until his retirement in 1986 and continued as a Director until 1997 when the company was sold.
His career was interrupted in May of 1944, as he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent to Europe after Basic Training at Camp Blanding, Florida. He served in France and Germany, as a rifleman assigned to the 10th Armored Division. The “Tigers”, as the Division was called, experienced combat in the “Rhineland” Campaign in February and March of 1945 and in the “Central Germany” campaign from March 28 to May 8, the end of World War II in Europe. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star, in addition to several war theater participation medals. He returned to Cambridge in March, 1946, after his discharge and resumed his career at Cambridge Wire Cloth.
He was a member of the 29th Division Maryland National Guard until 1951, when he resigned. He was the first person from the Eastern Shore commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Maryland National Guard.
Everett was married to Margaret Pink from February, 1942 until 1981. She passed away September 24, 2003.
In addition to his work life, Everett was involved in many community activities over the years. He was a member of American Legion Post #91, a life member of the V.F.W., life member of Elks Lodge #1272 and Past Exalted Ruler. Also, he was a past member of the Cambridge Yacht Club, Cambridge Country Club and Cambridge Skeet Club.
Additionally, he was a member of the 10th Armored Division Association, the 29th Division Association, as well as past member, Chairman, and Treasurer of the Dorchester General Hospital Board, past Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, member and past President of the Eastern Shore Personnel Association, and past Chairman of the Dorchester Managers Group. He also participated in the United Fund and Maryland Safety Council. He was a 40+ year charter member of the Acropolis Investment Club.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s, he enjoyed playing golf, shooting skeet and trap, hunting (particularly dove hunting) and boating. Many people remember Everett as Captain of the “Silver Fox”, his custom built 38-foot bay built fishing and crabbing boat. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and cruising the Bay on this boat from 1978 to 1996.
He is survived by three children: Robert P. Creighton and wife Mary Etta, Diana C. Trent and husband Wayne and Gloria M. Creighton and husband Melvin (Zeke) Willey. Also surviving are four grandchildren Mary Margaret (Maggie) Windsor and husband Larry, Laird Creighton and wife Danielle, Jeff Trent and wife Laura and Brad Trent and wife Jill; great grandchildren Robert Vaughn Windsor, Brooke Windsor, Austin Windsor, Alex Creighton, Ella Mae Creighton, Jacob Trent, Gavin Trent, Anna Trent, Teagan Trent and Taylor Trent. Nieces Ann Cook and Carol Willey also survive him.
He was pre-deceased by his parents and a sister Catherine C. Willey.
A graveside service will be held 1:15 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Dorchester Memorial Park., with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Visitation at Thomas Funeral Home P.A. from 12 – 1:00 p.m., with the Elks conducting a memorial service at 12:45. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P. O.
