Evon S. Harding, 88 of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. He was born in Cambridge on June 8, 1923, and was a son of the late Robert F. and Beatrice H. Smith Harding.
He attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942. He later attended Wesley Junior College in Dover. Mr. Harding served in the U.S. Army from February 18, 1943 and served in the 87th Infantry and 34th Infantry Division and served in Italy and the European Campaign. He was Honorably Discharged on December 13, 1945. On October 20, 1946 he was married to the former Greta M. Thomas. She passed away on March 16, 1978. Mr. Harding had worked at Airpax and later attended the Eastern Shore State Hospital School of Nursing where he received his LPN. He had worked at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center for a number of years, and had retired in 1983. Mr. Harding had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge since 1929, and had sung in the church choir. For 25 years he had resided in Erie, PA. He was a member of Cambridge Elks Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E., as well as Erie Lodge # 67 B.P.O.E. in Erie, PA. For many years he enjoyed bowling, photography, oil painting and was an avid reader. Since October of 2009 he had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
Survivors include a daughter Pamela H. Ayers and her husband David Ayers of Federalsburg, two sons David E. Harding of Salisbury, and Timothy R. Harding of Bowie. He is also survived by five grandchildren D. Wesley Ayers of Federalsburg, Angela Fletcher of Arlington, VA, Joshua Harding of Minneapolis, Sarah Long of Pocomoke and Garrett Harding of Bowie, several great grandchildren and two nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one brother Robert F. Harding II.
A funeral service will be held on Friday August 12, 2011 at 12:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be David Harding, Timothy Harding, D. Wesley Ayers II, Garrett R. Harding, Justin M. Ayers and Andrew T. Ayers. Honorary bearers will be Barry Harding and Bobby Harding. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Grace United Methodist Church Choir, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
