Fletcher J. "Mac" McNew, 78 of Cambridge, passed away at the Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury on Saturday April 9, 2011. He was born in Meadowview, Virginia on September 16, 1932, and was one of ten children born to the late William Frank and Edgar Alice Moore McNew, Sr.
Mr. McNew attended schools in Virginia. He enlisted in the US Army on December 4, 1950. While serving in the Army he had been stationed in Germany, and was Honorably Discharged on December 3, 1954. He went to work for Bethlehem Steel in 1955 and worked for them for 39 A½ years until he retired in August of 1994. Mr. McNew was a member of the Big Buck Rod & Gun Club. He was a member of the VFW Post # 7460 in Cambridge. On May 12, 1990 he was married to the former Susan A. Boswell. Mr. McNew was an avid hunter, enjoyed riding his four wheeler as well as spoiling his grandchildren. He had been in failing health for the past five months when he passed away on Saturday afternoon.
Survivors include his wife Sue McNew of Cambridge, one daughter Melinda Jarrell of Dundalk, two grandchildren Rielly Jarrell and Hailey Jarrell of Dundalk, two step daughters Cindy A. Ridinger of Laurel, DE, and Carol (CJ) Kaiser of Georgia, two step grandchildren Tabatha Tharp of Seaford and Shane Hearn of Laurel, DE. He is also by survived four great great grandchildren Lillyana Hearn, Kayden Hearn, Madison Tharp and Cameron Walls. He is also survived by one brother Ernest McNew of Madison, two sisters Phyllis Harris of Meadowview, VA and Marie Hinkle of Cardington, Ohio and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Irmgard McNew and six brother and sisters.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Delmar VFW Post # 8276, 200 West State Street in Delmar, MD. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
