She attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1940. On September 5, 1942 she was married to Francis D. "Jack" Mills. Mr. Mills passed away on August 8, 1993. She was later married to William Henry Thomas on June 3, 1995. Mr. Thomas passed away on March 3, 2009. She had worked at the Eastern Shore State Hospital for about 20 years as a medical secretary until she retired in 1983. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Her passion was cooking and having her family together for meals, and was famous for her special crab cakes, and looked forward to having lunch with her girl friends. Mrs. Thomas was fortunate to have two marriages with 51 years and 15 years respectfully with happiness and companionship. For a number of years she enjoyed taking bus trips and attending various shows. She had been in failing health since January and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center for the past three weeks where she passed away on Sunday morning.
Survivors include three sons James F. Mills of Kennesaw, Georgia, John "Jackie" C. Mills of Cambridge and Larry L. Mills of Cambridge, four grandchildren, Shane D. Mills, Jason C. Mills, Meghan L. Mills and Kelsey L. Mills and three great grandchildren, two nephews, one step son Edward C. Thomas, and three step grandchildren Lisa Keene, Kimberly Keene and Cody Thomas. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by two sisters Marguerite K. Paul and Mamie North Smith, one brother Kirwan Phillips and a sister who passed away as an infant.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 AM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Jay A. Hurley and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at the East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. Pallbearers will be Jason C. Mills, Shane D. Mills, Charles Tinley, Duane Zentgraf, Cody Thomas and L. Thomas Kuhn.
