Frances M. Twilley

Frances M. Twilley, 99, of East New Market formerly of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester. She was the first baby born at Cambridge Hospital on September 7, 1914 and was a daughter of the late Jamie P. and Cora Leonard Mills.

Mrs. Twilley was raised in the Town Point area and attended Cambridge High School. In December of 1939, she married William M. Twilley, who passed away on May 31, 1969. Her employment included Delaha's Restaurant, BVD sewing factory, Cambridge Police Department as a meter attendant and later was a dispatcher/clerk. She was sworn in as the first police woman in the State of Maryland. Mrs. Twilley retired in 1980 after 26 years of service. She volunteered at the Robin Hood Shop and the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary. She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and more than 40 years, she was the treasurer of Dr. Hines Bible Class.

She is survived by her son William M. Twilley and wife Diane of East New Market, a granddaughter Bridget Adshead and husband Danny of East New Market, three great grandchildren Dalton Adshead, Skye Adshead and Gavin Adshead, one sister Marian Doty of Cambridge, a brother Jamie P. Mills, Jr. of Cooks Point and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Twilley is preceded in death by four sisters Virginia Edwards, Betty Jean Yowell, Katherine "Lovie" Towers and Meta Mills and a brother Sidney Mills and a granddaughter Brandy Twilley.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Towers, Kevin Twilley, Danny Adshead, Rusty Riley, Mark Lewis and George Richard Doty.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A in Cambridge with Pastor Christina Blake and Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
