Fred Adrian Baker, educator and administrator was born August 10, 1931 at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore County, the son of George John Baker and Edna Dilbeck Baker of Fallston, Maryland. He passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017 at UMSMC at Easton. He was 85.
His education included graduation from Bel Air High School in 1948; Salisbury State Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science in 1958; and the University of Maryland with a Master of Education majoring in Elementary Administration in 1961. He, also, attended Towson State College for advanced studies in geography.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served overseas in anti-submarine forces. He was honorably discharged in March of 1955 from the Naval Anti-Submarine Base in Key West, Florida.
On October 17, 1980, he was married to the former Doris Lee Pritchett of Cambridge, MD. They enjoyed many happy times boating, fishing and traveling.
Mr. Baker began his teaching career at Caroline High School in Denton, MD. After two years, he returned home to Harford County to continue his teaching career at Dublin Elementary School. Four years later, he was appointed teaching principal at Darlington Elementary School. Two years later, he was appointed supervising principal at Jarrettsville Elementary School, a position from which he retired twenty two years later.
Mr. Baker was a long-time admirer of barbershop harmony. He sang with a well-known barbershop quartet during his college days at Salisbury.
Mr. Baker was a member and past president of the Harford County Prinicpal’s Association; a member and served on the board of the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company; and a member of the National Education Association and American Legion Post 91.
He is survived by his wife Doris Lee Pritchett-Baker of Cambridge, two sons George Adrian Baker and wife Kristin of Chestertown, Russell Baker and wife Susan of Westminster, four grandchildren Grace Adele Baker, Allison Kay Baker, Lauren Elise Baker and Madelyn Ruth Baker, a cousin Neva Simonton of Katy, TX, a brother in law Buddy Pritchett, Jr. and wife Anne Wilson Pritchett of Cambridge and their children Robyn Ayers of Federalsburg and Brian Lee Pritchett of Cambridge, several grand nieces and a cousin in law Margaret Ann Short and husband Richard. He is also survived by longtime friends Bobbe K. Brooks and Marilyn J. Nace. He was preceded in death by his mother and father George and Edna Baker.
Pallbearers will be Adrian Baker, Russell Baker, William Giannaras, Brian Pritchett, Buddy Pritchett, Jr., and Richard Short.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 1 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Kitty City Rescue, P.O. Box 1259, Cambridge, MD 21613.
