G. Diane Matthews, 71, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. She was born in Cambridge on January 5, 1943 and was the daughter of Zadith Ruark Cook and the late Harry Matthews Griffith.
She graduated from Cambridge High School and attended Salisbury College and Anne Arundel College. She worked as a seamstress for Todd Creations, and was an associate for Especially for You; her specialty was Christmas ornaments. In addition, she was a longtime lifeguard and swimming instructor at the Dorchester County Pool, working with the American Red Cross to provide swimming lessons for children. She also spent years coaching & keeping score for her daughters softball and hockey teams. She was also a member of Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary and Does of the Elks.
She is survived by her husband John Matthews of Cambridge, three daughters Beth Matthews of Salisbury, Amy Matthews and husband Greg Insley of Cambridge and Julie Harp and husband Chris of East New Market, four grandchildren Trey Davis, Hannah Harp, Megan Harp and Cian Harp, her mother Zadith Cook and husband John of Annapolis, a sister in law Diane Godfrey and her husband Arrel of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Besides her father, Mrs. Matthews is preceded in death by a brother Glenn Griffith.
Pallbearers will be Greg Insley, Chris Harp, Clint Collins, Mark Parker, Roger Brake and Stan Warner.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. William Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803 or to a charity of one's choice.
