G. Wayne Foxwell

George Wayne Foxwell, 84, of Church Creek, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his son and daughter-in-law’s home in Cambridge on April 12, 2025, with Ricky and Mary lovingly by his side.

Wayne was born in Cambridge, Maryland, on April 2, 1941, to the late Harry and Hazel Foxwell of Lakesville. On July 11, 1958, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Foxwell. They shared 60 wonderful years together before her passing in 2019.

Wayne was a humble, hardworking man who cherished his family and the simple joys of country living. He was an avid hunter of ducks and geese, often accompanied by his beloved hunting dog, King. Wayne served as both a hunting guide and caretaker for the Raccoon Creek Gunning Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed trapping muskrats and fishing on Charles Creek. Some of his favorite pastimes included watching old Westerns, listening to country music, and reminiscing about his youth growing up in South Dorchester.

Wayne was well-respected for his strong work ethic, having started working at the age of 16. He began his career as a commercial waterman aboard the dredge boat Stanley Norman, spending five to six days a week out on the bay before returning to shore with the oyster harvest. He also worked crabbing and oystering alongside several watermen, including his son Ricky. On weekends, he drove a delivery truck for Calvin Webster, delivering newspapers throughout Virginia.

Wayne spent 10 years at Cambridge Wire Cloth, where he learned welding, and later worked as a heavy equipment operator for Foxwell’s Excavation, bulldozing land across Talbot, Caroline, and Dorchester counties. He concluded his career as a welder for Maryland Wire Belts, retiring in 2006 after 18 years of service. Alongside his wife, he also operated Foxwell’s Lawn Care for over 30 years, maintaining many properties throughout Dorchester County.

Wayne is survived by his sons: Ricky and his wife Mary of Cambridge, Timmy and his wife Linda of Kansas, Frank and his wife Carol of Cambridge, and Troy of Lakesville. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Hazel, his brothers Bobby and Glenn, his wife Rebecca, his son Scott, and his beloved dogs King and Roscoe. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks and love to close friends: childhood companions Melvin Pritchett and Dale Insley; Cathy and Tony Hayden; Barry and Susan Wingate; John Ferguson; and Alex Travers.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Lucas Foxwell and Chad Foxwell, along with close friends Tony Hayden and Bill Moyers.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 11am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers or cards, the family asks that donations be made in Wayne and Rebecca’s honor to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
