Genevieve H. Thomas

Genevieve H. Thomas, 86 of Salisbury, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at the Wicomico Nursing Home on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. She was born in Yuma, Arizona on September 24, 1923, and was a daughter of the late William S. and Teresa "Ruby" Ochoa Hodges.

She attended schools in Arizona, and graduated from Yuma High School in 1940, and attended Tempe State College in Tempe, AZ. From September of 1942 until January of 1946 she had worked as secretary to the Base Commander at the Yuma Airfield. On July 4, 1943 she was married to Leslie M. Thomas. Mr. Thomas passed away on April 10, 1994. Mrs. Thomas was a communicant of St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church in Cambridge. For a number of years she had substituted at the Academy School in Cambridge. She later worked at Western Publishing Corp. from October 1961 until January 1986. Mrs. Thomas later worked part time as a secretary at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners from September of 1994 until September of 2000. She was a lifetime member of the Maryland PTA, Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, volunteered at the Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and was also a volunteer at Dorchester County Hospice as well as Coastal Hospice. Since March of 2002 Mrs. Thomas has made her home with her daughter in Salisbury. She had been in failing health since Christmas, and had been a patient at the Wicomico Nursing Home since March 1st where she passed away on Tuesday evening.

Survivors include one daughter Janet T. Veditz and her husband Brian T. Veditz of Salisbury, 2 sons Leslie M. Thomas, Jr. and his wife Terry G. Thomas of Herndon, VA and Larry M. Thomas and his wife Sandra Thomas of Hummelstown, PA, four granddaughters Shey Conover, Carly Kincaid, Jennifer Thomas and Meredith Thomas, four grandsons David Thomas, Michael Thomas, Adam Thomas and Josh Thomas. She is also survived by a great grandson Harper Conover, one niece and two nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a brother William S. Hodges, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church on Glasgow Road in Cambridge on Wednesday, April 28th at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leslie M. Thomas, Jr., David Thomas, Mike Thomas, Josh Thomas, Adam Thomas, Larry M. Thomas and Brian T. Veditz. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 415 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
