George Howard Macey

George Howard Macey (WA3JAX) of Preston, MD went home to be with the LORD on August 14, 2018. George was born on Feb 5, 1924 to Horace Thomas Macey Sr. and Hazel O (Howard) Macey in rural Glen Burnie, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Macey, and 3 siblings; Doretta Owens, Margorie Nichols and H. Thomas Macey Jr. As a youth George was very active in the family greenhouse business while attending school as well as participating in the local Boy Scout Troop #325.  George earned the rank of Eagle Scout on Dec 11, 1942, making him the 1st Scout to receive this honor in Anne Arundel County.

In 1943, George quit high school and joined the US Navy. He served in WWII in The Navy Armed Guard protecting merchant ships carrying supplies for the war effort. George was honorably discharged from The Navy in 1946 at which time he returned home to Glen Burnie.

On Sept 13, 1947 George married his childhood sweetheart Gertrude (Wilkes) Macey, a union that lasted for 53 years and would include the birth of 2 children.  George worked for Hine Brothers of Glen Burnie, Dorchester General Hospital as a Stationary Engineer and later retired from the Federal Government. George and Gertrude enjoyed camping, attending Coachman Camper Rallies, and gold prospecting.

Over the course of George’s life, he was a member/volunteer of the following organizations; Armed Guard Assoc., Easton Amateur Radio Society (EARS), Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Assoc., John W. Brown Liberty Ship. George’s favorite hobbies consisted of reading/studying the Bible, tinkering in his workshop at the farm, talking to people all over the world as an avid HAM radio operator.  He also volunteered as a crew member of the John W. Brown Liberty Ship, which allowed George to be re-certified as a Seamen at the age of 85.

George is survived by his daughter, Vista G. Cheesman (Mike) of Preston, MD and son, George W. Macey (Anita) of Easton, MD. Surviving Grandchildren are:  Michael Cheesman (Heather), Lisa Baker (Matt), Cindy Jones (Travis), David Macey, and Surviving Great-Grand Children are: Caroline Baker, Matthew Baker Jr, Brooke Cheesman, Austin Cheesman, Anna Lynn Cheesman, Hailey Jones, Sarah Jones, and Isaac Macey.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 12 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. with Pastor Michael Hurley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
