George Dewey Meekins, Jr

June 27, 1927 — March 9, 2013

George Dewey Meekins, Jr., 85, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Port Norris, NJ on June 27, 1927 and was a son of the late George D. Meekins, Sr. and Effie Inel Meekins.

He attended schools in Hoopers Island. Dewey served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On August 17, 1956, he married the former Mary Jane Fox. In his earlier years, Dewey was employed by Blackwater Refuge and National Can during the winter months, but all of his life he was owner/operator of Chesapeake Exterminating Company. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, gardening, collecting decoys and traveling. Dewey was a life member of the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW and a member of the American Legion Post 91.

He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Meekins of Cambridge, two sons George Dewey Meekins, III and his partner Michael Palmer of Annandale, VA and Mark Meekins and wife Nancy of Linkwood, a daughter Sherry Lynn Satterfield of Cambridge, two grandchildren Shane Satterfield of Millersville, MD and Tiffany Mowery and husband Patrick of Cambridge, two great grandchildren Autumn Mowery and Ethan Mowery, a sister Edna Haday of New Jersey, his pet beagle Brittany and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Dewey is preceded in death by a sister Viola Tracy.

Honorary pallbearers will Dickie Lowery, Leslie Booze, Donnie Creighton, Steve Jones, Mike Bradley, William Jack Parks and Larry Parks.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 3p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Marci Bee Foundation, c/o Terry Wheatley, 2355 Jenkins Creek Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Kitty City Rescue, P.O.
