Grace Brannock Smith Dougherty

Grace Dougherty, 94, of St. Petersburg, born April 7, 1919, a retired teacher, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Westminster Suncoast Health Center. She lived at Westminster Shores Retirement Community since 1998. Born in Cambridge, MD, daughter of the late Russell P and Leila B Smith, she attended high school in Cambridge and was a graduate of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). Wife of the late Rev. A. Edward Dougherty, a United Methodist Minister, she taught elementary school in Manchester, NH, for 22 years. During that time she took graduate courses at the University of New Hampshire. The couple retired to Florida in 1983 residing in the Bahama Shores neighborhood and later at Westminster Shores. Her husband of 59 years died in 2001. Mrs. Dougherty is survived by three sons, Alexander E. Dougherty III (Ann), Jeffrey M. Dougherty (Lynne), and Timothy R. Dougherty, and two daughters, Anna Lee Shipman and Leila S. Lavigne (Gerald); eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Russell P. Smith of Cambridge, MD. Three brothers, Wallace, Bayly, and Edward and a sister, Anna Rue, died before her. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at East New Market Cemetery with Rev. Sumner Jones officiating. The arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, MD.
