Hansel D. "Buddy" Travers, Jr

Hansel D. "Buddy" Travers, Jr., 81, of Fishing Creek passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was born in Fishing Creek on May 9, 1931 and was a son of the late Hansel D. Travers, Sr. and Edna Travers.

Buddy attended school in Hoopers Island. On August 20, 1950, he married the former Dorothy Niblett. In his earlier years, he worked on the water crabbing and tonging. Later, Buddy started his painting business where he worked until he retired. He also owned Narrows School House in Hoopers Island where he was the local barber. It wasn't uncommon for him to even make a house call. He enjoyed taking care of the stray animals on the island, eating local seafood and watching wrestling.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Dorothy A. Travers of Fishing Creek, his children Hansel "Buck" Travers III and companion Nancy Hudson of East New Market, Linda Fraley of Cambridge, Danny Travers of East New Market, Cindy Warfield and husband Dickie of Cambridge and Theresa Hines and husband Paul of Cambridge, grandchildren Shannon Turner and husband Brian, Michelle Dietrich and husband Frank, Stephanie Conn and husband John, Julie Cosbey and husband Todd, Kelley Lewis and husband Ed, Danielle Travers, Richard Warfield and wife Amy, Lauren Travers, Lindsay Travers and Austin Hines, great grandchildren Jennah Lewis, Brandon Fitzhugh, Colleen Cosbey, Alaijah Nichols, Trevor Cosbey, Ethan Hughes, Kayla Lewis, Jacob Conn, Carter Warfield, Jude Travers, Amelia Brooks, Trinity Lewis, Will Dietrich,Leah Warfield and Marlee Turner, a sister Ruth Thomas and husband David of Cambridge, sister in law June Elzey and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Buddy is preceded in death by a grandson Michael Fitzhugh, a granddaughter Katherine Warfield, a son in law Don Fraley, a daughter in law Diane Travers, and three sisters Peggy Insley, Marie Elliott and Patsy Monte.

Pallbearers will be Richard Warfield, Brandon Fitzhugh, Austin Hines, Dickie Warfield, Paul Hines, John Conn and Frank Dietrich. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Conn, Will Dietrich, Carter Warfield, Ethan Hughes and Jude Travers. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastors Dave Stewart and Jack Diehl officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service.
